Three months ago the band agreed to play Rocky Fest in the mountain city of Julian.
As the time got closer to play this mountain party it seemed that making this trek might be more than the band had anticipated.
Chin Hai reminded the band with no uncertain words that Rocky has been a strong supporter of the Ass Pocket Whiskey Fellas and we couldn’t back out now.
First stop was Costco to fill up the Big Gig Rig maxing out my credit card at $150.00 for gas. That took 15 minutes to pour in almost 40 gallons and then we were off. 5 North to 52 East to Poway, through Ramona and to the top of the hill we went. After finding Julian High School it was 3.3 miles down the backside of Banner Grade. There it was, a lone pink marker sticking out of the Manzanita showing the turn out.
The Big Gig Rig squeaked loudly as we crawled down the rain worn dirt road to the meeting place where the hillside was cut flat making room for about 5 motorhomes.
Rocky and his team showed up with their trucks to transfer all the music equipment down the steepest part of the road where we finally saw the stage and the dance floor! It looked like about 5 people were there but when we made the final turn, there was more people than you could count from the road above. We set the speakers on the stage and had a couple beers to settle into this beautiful property that Rocky calls his Canyon Of Dreams. Jack set up the PA and after a quick sound check it was on! The Ass Pocket Whiskey Fellas played into the night filling the air with some cool tunes and filling the dance floor with delighted campers.
A good time was had by all and as it turned out, Julian and Rocky’s Canyon of Dreams isn’t that far away after all… Thanks for having us Rocky!
